Traveling like a local allows you to experience a destination more authentically and often more economically. Don't worry though, I've done plenty of things wrong just like everyone else. After years of international travel though, I learned a few things.

Here are five essential tips to help you blend in and enjoy your travels like a local:
1. Learn Phrases
Knowing basic phrases like “hello” and “thank you” or how to ask basic questions in the local language can open doors for communication and show respect. This will lead to more genuine interactions and teach you more about the city.
It's also important to remember that although English is popular worldwide, not everyone speaks English and it can be rude to assume everyone does. I've visited some countries where I needed to immediately step my language game up because I hadn't prepared much beforehand!
My favorite thing to do is learn the alphabet to understand how words are pronounced via YouTube videos. Then I'll make sure to download the entire language on Google Translate and make notes of phrases and words I want to practice and remember such as "Hello" "Goodbye" and "How much?" "Where is the bathroom" and any other common phrases. If the entire language is downloaded, you can access it without data or service. My favorite phrase to learn is "I'm sorry, I only speak a little *language*, do you speak English?"

2. Eat Locally
Local eateries offer a taste of authentic cuisine and are often more affordable and less touristy. This will give you a more immersive culinary experience and won’t break your pockets.
Try to avoid places with English menus, as those places typically target tourists. Google Translate also has an option to take a picture of a menu and it will translate the picture! (this is not sponsored by Google Translate I swear) A great way to find local places to eat is by talking to locals!
Honorable mention: take a cooking class!

3. Use Public Transport or Walk
Not only is it budget-friendly, but it gives you insight into daily life! Walking around also helps you discover hidden gems you might miss in a car. Walking around can also help you burn off all the calories you're probably eating because your on vacation in a place with amazing culinary options.
When walking or using public transport, I suggest using Google Maps. Apple Maps for some reason does not work well in foreign countries and you will get lost and be really annoyed (like i have done plenty of times.) Google Translate will also have subway or bus times for local public transport which is super convenient!
Honorable mention: biking (prepare to sweat)
4. Shop Local Markets
Markets are often vibrant places to see local culture in action, try regional specialties, and find unique souvenirs. Handmade and locally-produced items are so much better than mass-produced souvenirs. Talking to vendors and craftspeople will also give you insight into local traditions and cultures.

5. Respect Customs
Remember you’re not at home! This will show respect and foster more positive interactions if dressed appropriately. (This dress made a great Instagram post but it also denied me entry into The Duomo, please learn from my mistakes)
I spent months in Italy wearing crop tops and mini skirts and got brutally stared at thinking it was because of my race only to realize it was because of what I was wearing. I felt like an idiot. When I began dressing more like an Italian, I began getting more respect from locals.
It's also fun to try new styles and incorporate different aspects of cultures into your personal style!
Bonus Tip:
Stay in local accommodations like homestays, guesthouses, or hostels to connect deeper and meet more travelers!
Hostels are budget-friendly and a great place to meet like-minded individuals. Many people solo traveling who are young, broke, and want to experience the world (and party). Do your research on each stay though and know that it might not be the best place you've ever stayed in your life but it will be a great experience.
Hope this helped! Happy travels :)
